[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control – 8

I can’t help but foresee a sorrowful or bittersweet ending for Msyu.  The worst thing she could do was develop a relationship with her Entre, Kimimaro, because there are only two possible endings between the two.  Either Kimimaro loses it all and is banished from the Financial District, never able to see or contact Msyu again, or the Financial District meets its end, like what we saw in the Southeast Asian Financial District, and Msyu evaporates into whatever material makes up these hells.  I hope there’s an uplifting and positive future for Msyu but the murky and troubling present give the impression that such a finale may be impossible.

I find Msyu to be the most fascinating character in all of C.  As an Asset, her entire purpose is to serve Kimimaro and earn him gains financially through weekly Deals.  In doing so, she suffers various wounds and injuries which, judging from her screams and comments, means she feels some degree of pain.  It’s not a pretty relationship, but this partnership is functional and sufficient for many of the Entres in the Financial District.  Assets don’t need feelings when their only purpose is to serve.

Msyu began like any other Asset, concerned only with fighting and winning.  Her fiery personality was apparent during that first Deal, but she never took her mind off the battle.  But with Kimimaro as her Entre, Msyu slowly began to evolve into something more.  Msyu began to bond with Kimimaro and his personality began to pass onto her.  She began to try to understand Kimimaro who behaved like no other Entre in the Financial Dirstict.  Now, she’s curious and interested in the real world beyond Kimimaro, wanting to try ramen and other foods and wondering what’s going through her Entre’s mind.  Her evolution from a mere fighting avatar into a true friend is nothing short of remarkable.

But that’s not all I find so fascinating about Msyu.  The main reason is that she has begun to fall in love with her Entre.  No other Asset should feel that way about their Entre since all they do is fight for their benefit and receive nothing in return besides whatever battle wounds they sustained.  Msyu’s feelings for her Entre are the complete opposite of what they should be.  She’s unlike any other Asset in that regard.  But that’s not a good thing.  The bond Msyu feels between her and Kimimaro will definitely end in catastrophe.

Assets are not supposed to develop feelings for the Entres because they can never be together forever.  During the time in the Financial District, an Asset appears whenever a new Entre arrives and they begin their economic adventure together until the Entre is removed and the Asset stays behind.  They can only be together while the Entre is in the Financial District with a valid card.  Once the Entre loses their privileges, then not only have they lost their future but also their Asset as well.  This might explain why Assets are only there to fight and why many in the Financial District choose not to befriend their allies.

That’s why I can only see some sort of depressing ending for Msyu.  Whatever happens to Kimimaro, whether he wins or loses, he’ll have a future without Msyu.  It became obvious to me when he began burning his money in the middle of the Financial District, showing he wanted his old future back rather than to eventually end up like Ebara-sensei.  If he succeeds, then he’ll return to a world without Msyu.  If not, then he’ll end up bankrupt and without Msyu.  Either way, Msyu will be disconnected from her love.  But it seems that way for all Assets, regardless of situation or level of intimacy.  Perhaps that’s why virtually all Assets take a business-only approach to their relationships.

I wonder how Mikuni has three Assets while everyone else has one.  He has Q, that moth-lady that is always with Q, and the butler-guy.  How does someone get more than one Asset like that?  Is it because of his wealth?  Or did he trade in the futures of two others and then just take their Assets?  Hopefully they’ll get into that sometime soon, especially if he’ll be battling frequently in the next few episodes, but it’s something that’s bothered me when you see everyone else stuck with one.  And with all the discussion on what form the Assets take, there might be a clue with him having three instead of just one.  Hopefully we see Q fight soon, too.
