Further Thoughts and Analysis on Another

After receiving some interesting feedback and comments and studying people’s thoughts and impressions, I’ve decided to reanalyze the first episode of Another to see if I misinterpreted or, more accurately, misjudged the horror elements employed in the first episode.  Now, after reviewing some scenes and giving the anime more thought, I believe I missed a lot of foreshadows, subtle hints, and even the first death of the series.  Whoops.

Let’s start with what I noticed first when rewatching the most notable parts of the first episode.  The opening sequence shows various clips like a body hanging, a splash in the river, a speeding car’s tires, glass shattering on the sidewalk, and a crashing chandelier among other imagery which I believe are foreshadows of student deaths that will soon occur.  The reason I believe this is because I’ve seen the same technique employed before in other anime like xxxHOLiC and Future Diary.  If that’s the case, we might have a good idea how some of these kids will die but not who or why.  I also believe the series is trying to hint that the dolls are actually students although I’m not sure since all the dolls we’ve seen are female so far.  Not sure what to make of that but perhaps the clothing (or lack thereof) might be more telling than the anatomy of the dolls.  Going to keep an eye out on the dolls, when they appear, and see if there is any indication if they line up to students or not.  And if that turns out to be true in the end, then we probably already had the first death of the series with Izumi Akazawa.  Her shaking Kouichi’s hand drew a surprised almost ghastly reaction from Yukari and Kazami, almost like something went horrifically wrong.  Follow that up with Misaki taking the nude and blindfolded doll to the morgue, Izumi being absent in school the next day, and Kazami quickly changing the subject when Kouichi questions her presence.  Strange, isn’t it?  But then I could be also reading too much into everything since she is in the ending sequence.  Who knows then at this point but I’m willing to guess she is already dead.  Also strange to note that Yukari sprained her ankle so quickly, especially when she had normal socks and shoes on in the classroom that morning.  And it’s not like she sprained her ankle during PE since she was still in her school uniform and not a PE one.  Wonder if something will happen to her soon.  Should be fun to slowly dissect these mysteries and figure out what exactly is going on with Another.  I might fall in love with analyzing this anime every week.

Well, I don’t think that the red-haired girl is dead yet. The reaction to the handshake may be telling, but it does seem too sudden. I do agree with you that the opening was foreshadowing the coming deaths, or at least some misfortune.

I do wonder about the dolls though, if your theory is true about them representing the students, its rather telling that they are all female dolls. But also, if the dolls were supposed to represent people, then who is the doll that Mei took to the Morgue? The only logical answer at this point would be that it is Izumi, but again it just feels to early. Not to mention odd, because you would think that they would make a big deal about the first death.

Last, I agree with you. I hope that this show stays this good because it is going to be a lot of fun dissect every week. :D

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve been debating back and forth about Izumi being dead or not since she is shown in the opening and ending which is usually only reserved for important characters and I doubt she would be there if she were already dead. I may be trying to overhunt for clues or hints here but they always have these types of things in the beginning of a series like this, either for people who’ve read the novel/manga and are starting from the beginning here or for people like me who love to contemplate. Guess we’ll find out shortly!

Some good theories there. i didn’t pick up on the violent stuff in the intro so that would be interesting. Foreshadowing in anime is common so it would make sense to see it in a horror anime.

I also got the feeling something bad will come of that handshake, we will see soon guess.

Yeah that handshake sure got some pretty strange reactions, especially since it was Izumi who stuck her hand out there initiating it, too. There are a lot of details being shown the in the first episode that we generally have no clue what they mean but it’s something for us to pay attention to and help us figure out what’s going on in this anime. Hope we get some more explanations in episode 2 about these theories since I’m eager to see if I’m right, wrong, or somewhere in the middle.

Heh, just love reading your analysis. Always over thinking as usually (that is a good thing). I was thinking the same thing with the dolls. Only question now: Where is the master of the dolls? I see it more mystery orientated than horror, but as previously mentioned it does give off a unsettling and fragile air. Students having conditions and all…

Yeah, at this point, I’m inclined to call it a mystery, too, but with those frequent shots of the decaying dolls and the haunting music, it’s like the anime is trying to say, “no, we’re not a mystery anime, we’re a horror one, just look at all this stuff.” The students having these conditions does help but until there is death or fear or anything like that, it’s more mystery than horror.

And to try to solve the first mystery on who the master of the dolls is, the obvious guess would be Misaki but it likely isn’t. Doesn’t appear a student or teacher would be either. That leaves someone who hasn’t appeared yet… or… maybe a family member. Would explain why everyone in the school is afraid of Kou.
