Puella Magi Madoka Magica – 7

Throughout the course of the series, there have been obvious and subtle Faustian themes in Puella Magi Madoka Magica (or as some say, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica). There’s the personification of white, fluffy evil, Kyubey (or as some say, QB or Kyuubee), the whole soul/wish exchange (the SEC should really look into regulating this), and so on.

And while I agree with these strong Faustian themes, I can’t help but look to other themes as well. What I see is Madoka becoming a Shakespearean tragedy. And another theme I see creeping into the series is the seven deadly sins, too.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica – 6

Everywhere I look (probably 1-2 sites), I always hear about how evil Kyubey is and how wonderful Homura is.  After episode 6, I’m beginning to lean the other way.  In fact, I’ll argue that Kyubey is not evil and Homura really isn’t all that good, either.

So, what is the true purpose of being a Puella Magi?  Is it merely to be selfish and collect Grief Seeds for continued existence or is it to benefit society by preventing unnecessary deaths?  Think of an answer and then scroll down to see what I came up with.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica – 1

So, Akiyuki Shinbo is directing a magical girl anime and Shaft is doing the animation.  Having watched and loved some of their previous works (Bakemonogatari, Maria Holic, ef series), I could only get thrilled to see they were at it again this season with Puella Magi Madoka Magica.  And I am not disappointed.
