Every season has its defining features. Autumn, for example, is known for its bountiful harvests and leaves falling to the ground. Likewise, every anime season has its distinguishing characteristics thanks to the anime that air within its interval. Sometimes, anime seasons are bountiful, like an autumn harvest, and others are barren, like the trees after shedding their leaves. What type of season will Autumn 2016 bring us? Spring is truly a time of renaissance, a season when the world awakens from its dormant slumber of winter to period of growth and maturity. It’s a time when sunlight becomes plentiful, flowers bloom, and animals happily frolic in the fields and forests. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness. It was the Spring Autumn of hope, it was the Winter of despair. Or rather, it was the Autumn 2015 anime season, it was the Winter 2016 anime season. Never have I seen such a stark, significant contrast in the types and content of anime between consecutive seasons, but we’re following up arguably the best anime season in recent memory with quite possibly the worst. If you haven’t checked, now might be a good time to see why I am so crestfallen with the anime airing this winter.

The way most people realize that it’s the beginning of autumn is that the days begin to grow shorter, the air begins to feel cooler, and the trees transition into a palette of warm yellows, oranges and reds. But for me, the only way I realize that it’s the beginning of autumn is when the autumn anime season begins! And yes, with the start of the Autumn 2015 anime season this week, it’s time again to look ahead to this new season of anime and project, speculate, and guesstimate which anime we should watch.

For anime characters, summer means vacation, sun, the beach, bikinis, shaved ice, matsuri, fireworks, catching bugs, and doing all your homework on the last day before it’s due. For me, summer means another season of anime, and it’s time for me to preview all the new and exciting anime that will air over the next three months. The beginning of Spring is known for one thing in Japan and one thing only: a new season of anime. Also cherry blossoms and probably several other things, but those aren’t nearly as iconic to springtime in Japan as the debut of roughly 50 new TV anime in addition to an ever growing number of shorts, OVAs, and movies. As always, the focus of these previews will be on the newly airing TV anime which I will provide my assessment and plans for the next three months. What, exactly, should we be looking forward to for the Spring 2015 anime season?
