12 Days of Anime (2013) – Day 1 – The Final Chapter of Needless, the End to my Favorite Manga and the Tale of my Anime/Manga Revolution

On May 19, 2013, the June issue of Ultra Jump debuted as any normal issue of a mangazine would. However, this particular issue was noticeably different with an announcement following the 113rd chapter of Needless stating that next month’s chapter would be the final one. Without any preparation or any proper warning, the sudden and abrupt ending was only a month away. The announcement began to explain the accelerated pace of the last few chapters and the conclusions of many loose ends, but with so much more remaining and the peculiar developments of late, especially some of the absolutely shocking events in 113, you wondered just how the manga could end with an unfortunate amount of unanswered questions. But one month later, Needless 114 debuted and so ended the serialization of my favorite manga.

Not even four weeks ago, when episode 7 of Samurai Flamenco aired, it seemed like another ordinary episode with heroes solving petty crimes… or at least attempting to. After a handful of episodes with Hazama as a costumed superhero, followed closely behind by a courageous trio of idols, the Flamenco Girls, the world of Samurai Flamenco found itself bored with its premise. In fact, the characters felt bored too, with the drop in crime, the reduction in activity and even a decline in interest from Gotou and the police. Something needed to shake up this series, right? And then came the big reveal. Yup, it was that one big moment in Samurai Flamenco. We learned that Hazama’s parents were murdered. The case was never solved. It was devastating. It was perturbing. It was going to be the biggest thing in Samurai Flamenco, shifting the direction of the series in a whole new direction. You figured nothing would top that, right? Right?

A long, long time ago, back when you actually probably cared about these episodes: why Yeti is the best character in Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san (and why the series should be about her instead), changing the perspectives of how we view the characters in Shingeki no Kyojin, how the evolution of Hataraku Maou-sama! holds up thus far, and why the sheer awkwardness of Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge is actually a good thing.
